Annette, remember, impeachment is a vote to bring charges in the Senate, not a conviction. The chances of impeachment are only slightly better than 50-50. According to JHG the senate has it in its power not to hold a trial. In any case, the chances of conviction and removal from office is zero and none. It takes 2/3 to convict. These numbers are well-known to everybody, so, I think the impeachment will be a non-event for the market. The ramifications for the country are a different story.
If the threat of removal from office were real the market would go into a tail-spin because his administration has done an excellent job with the economy (good, sustained growth, very low unemployment, and virtually no inflation), but Gore would be an unknown.
My own opinion is that this bruhaha has more to do with personal animus than misfeasance or malfeasance. Remember, according to the latest polls that I've seen, 62% of Americans do not want him removed from office. This is a far cry from what you said:
You'd think everyone would be oh so happy to get rid of him.
