My understanding of rendering is that it's the creation of the final product (frames of the motion picture) from the information developed during the creative process. Things like lighting, shadows, texturing, etc. have to be calculated for each frame. It's very compute intensive, so MIPS or MFLOPS per dollar is important. Obviously, reliability is also important, since huge amounts of data are involved.
