Toshiba Chooses Geoworks' Technology Platform To Explore Wireless Information Services

Geoworks Server Technology to Relay Services in Japan

December 14, 1998 06:00 AM
ALAMEDA, Calif., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Geoworks Corporation GWRX , a leading provider of wireless software and service solutions, announced today that Toshiba Corporation will use Geoworks Premion Server+ technology for its information services program. The deal will enable Toshiba to utilize Geoworks' content server to deliver news and information services to client portable devices.
Toshiba is the first company to offer services via Geoworks' Premion Server+. Toshiba plans to use Premion Server+ to relay over-the-air Japanese news and information to portable device users.

In striking the deal with Toshiba, Geoworks has introduced its server technology to the top segment of one of the fastest-growing wireless markets in the world. Japan currently has more than 34 million wireless subscribers, more than 27 percent of the country's population.

Premion Server+ is a local content server that features flexible architecture and easy integration with existing systems. Geoworks' network server technology supports multiple languages, including HTML, WML, XML, HDML, Compact HTML, Simple text, TTML and flexible delivery protocol support (HTTP, HDTP, WTP, SMTP, SMS). This gives Toshiba the ability to transmit content, value-added services or promotions to a wide range of wireless devices, including messaging phones such as the Genio and Dialo.

"What impressed us about Geoworks' server technology was its adaptability to the standards already in place by Toshiba and the wireless market," said Dr. Tsutomu Kawada, General Manager, Information Provider Division, Toshiba Corporation. "We found Premion Server+ to integrate well with systems, software and networks in the diverse Japanese market, allowing Toshiba to continue its leadership position in information delivery."
