12-15-98 Samsung to invest W1 tril. in chip sector
koreaherald.co.kr

Samsung Electronics Co. said yesterday it will invest 1 trillion won ($833 million) in the semiconductor sector next year
to meet the expected rebound in the global chip market. A top company official said the investment will largely go into
the construction of a semiconductor assembly line in its Kiheung plant. The new line, which will produce 64M dynamic
random access memory (DRAM) and 256M DRAM chips, will start operation as early as next August, the official said.
"Because of the opaque economic prospects, we had suspended additional investment. But we decided to resume it as
signs are becoming clear that the chip industry will rebound," he said, adding that timely facility expansion is what counts
most.

The large-scale investment is also possible as Samsung Electronics has improved its financial structure through
restructuring, the official said. Samsung has amassed 1.5 trillion won in cash through the sell-off of unprofitable assets
and reduced bank loans by as much as 5 trillion won, according to the official. The expansion plan is expected to boost
Samsung Group's entire investment for next year by 29 percent to 4.5 trillion. Encouraged by the easing of a supply glut
and following a rebound in chip prices in the global semiconductor market, Samsung is expected to post 1 trillion won in
net profit by the end of this year. (NIS)
