Numerical Technologies Awarded 'Investors Choice' At Technology Outlook Conference

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1998--Numerical Technologies, Inc. (NTI) was one of ten companies chosen as 'Most Likely to Succeed' at the Technology Outlook conference hosted by Technologic Partners earlier this week.

NTI was chosen for the 'Investors Choice' honor from among more than 70 privately financed technology companies that presented their business plans at the conference.

"Our database consists of thousands of venture-backed companies," said Richard Shaffer, founder of Technologic Partners and the conference's host. "We're always looking for exciting young venture-backed companies, and Numerical Technologies has distinguished itself very quickly. The company has identified a pressing need within the semiconductor industry and is helping to fill that need with solid technology and a bright management team."

Y.C. (Buno) Pati, president and CEO of NTI, said, "We're honored to be voted 'most likely to succeed' by this esteemed audience. The award is an endorsement of our technology vision: enabling subwavelength IC design. Our strategy for achieving that is to create portable solutions across the design and manufacturing software and equipment spectrum. We'll be working with electronic design automation suppliers, equipment vendors, mask shops, and foundries, and intend to win through alliances with all the companies we touch."

Numerical Technologies develops and markets software applications and services that enable integrated circuit (IC) designers and manufacturers to produce ICs with subwavelength(1) feature sizes. NTI's products and services provide an essential link between IC design and manufacturing for the world's leading microprocessor companies and semiconductor foundries.

NTI's products are based on two critical technologies: phase-shifting and optical proximity correction (OPC). Phase-shifting techniques alternate positive and negative light to prevent the light from blurring, providing improved depth of focus. OPC techniques add features to the design layout to neutralize the effects of optical distortion, which occur in subwavelength designs.
More information on NTI's products and services can be found at www.numeritech.com.

This year NTI formed strategic alliances with KLA-Tencor (Nasdaq:KLAC), Applied Materials (Nasdaq:AMAT), Zygo (Nasdaq:ZIGO), DuPont Photomasks (Nasdaq:DPMI) and Duet. Additional information about NTI is available on the Web at www.numeritech.com.

Selection of the Investors' Choice honors was based on voting by the audience and on recommendations from a Roundtable of distinguished technology investors. Following each CEO's presentation, the audience was asked to rate the company's prospects for success. In addition to voting by the audience, selection for the Investors' Choice award was based on recommendations from a panel of distinguished technology investors that included Jonathan Meyers, managing director at SoundView Financial Group; Michael Murphy, editor of the California Technology Stock Letter; Andrew Rappaport, partner at August Capital; and Peter Wagner, partner at Accel Partners.

(1) Subwavelength feature sizes are below the wavelength of the optical light sources used in steppers to transfer designs onto silicon wafers.
