Mr. Pinson responded. I then responded to his response. Here they are.

My original text:

1. Master vs. Slave - it's those pesky jumpers. I solved most of the problem by reconfiguring my home and work PCs - I set all DHDs as slaves. It is not an intuitive solution and some say I'm sacrificing performance (though I can't see how). Unfortunately, my work-PC's master HD must be re-jumpered whenever I forget and leave the DHD at home.

His response:

not with Hi-Val...plug & play on this one...no jumpers

My response:

The jumpers I refer to are on the hard drives themselves, not on the docking bays, so they must be set correctly regardless of whether they are connected via a docking bay, or directly to the cable. I am referring to the Master/Slave jumpers that every hard drive currently has. Most also have a "Master-with-Slave-Present" setting that requires re-jumpering to the "Master" setting when the Slave is removed. I "solve" the problem by making sure that only recent ATAPI devices are put in the Master position since I've found that none of these have the "Master-with-Slave-Present" setting.
