Colors have nothing to do with whether the trade is a buy or sell. All they tell you is whether the trade is up or down. On my system you can set an option using either the net change from the previous close, or from the the last trade. Most tickers/monitors probably use the previous close to determine the color of the latest trade.

I use a "volume summary report" in a time and sales window, showing how many trades took place at the bid, ask or middle, to give some idea of the overall balance between buys/sells, but that is just a rough estimate, as buys can occur at the bid, and vice versa.
