3Dfx wouldn't have gotten what it needed by buying Quantum back.

1. 3Dfx needed any top 5 OEM qualified manufacturer for its products
2) 3Dfx needs some one with presence in Both retail and OEM channels

Though Quantum put out great quality products, I don't think they are top tier qualifies and they have insignificant presence in the OEM channel.
