Colin how does a married couple split a carried forward LT loss

NOT AN IRA MATTER: It was reported as married filing jointly in past years but married filing separately is being considered for 1998 .

A large LT loss was filed in detail (6 yrs ago) by the husband . Some of it has been taken at $3k year and some other LT has been added by both parties.

If filing married separately in 1998 , can one party claim all the remaining LT loss ?

Thanks in advance,
Jim K.

PS: Sorry for this non-IRA posting
