I'll give you one example of how destructive this kind of event can be. Right now, there is a window of opportunity to deal with social security and medicare. Clinton is a lame duck and has a chance to try to move Congress and the media towards some sort of solution that will keep the whole system from breaking down in 30 years. If its not done now, in 1999, it won't be dealt with for at least 3 years maybe 6 due to election cycles.

Now I'm sure that there will be plenty of posts saying that SS is dead and gone and nothing can save it and we shouldn't try to save it. That's all well and good until the reality of it collapsing hits.
