Software firm wins Canada digital ID contract

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Security software supplier Entrust Technologies Inc. Monday said it had won a contract from the
Ontario government to supply digital identification technology to every resident of the province.

A spokesman for the Richardson, Texas-based company said the Ontario government plans in early 1999 to begin issuing 11
million digital certificates, one for each Ontario resident and business, to provide for secure electronic communications.

A spokeswoman for Entrust, the computer security spin-off of Canadian telecommunications equipment maker Northern
Telecom Ltd (NYSE:NT - news). (NTL.TO), said the Ontario contract was worth ''multi-millions'' of dollars but did not
specify the amount.

Entrust is a leading supplier of public-key infrastructure (PKI) digital encoding software that can be used to identify and
authenticate that a computer user is who he or she purports to be, a vital step for conducting secure electronic commerce.

Under the terms of the deal with Ontario, Entrust said its technology would be part of the province's efforts to register
businesses online and for ServiceOntario, a government plan to provide secure Internet access and electronic mail. It would
also be used to allow residents to apply for driver's licenses online and as part of a child protection ID plan.

Entrust won contract in September 1998 but only now has been given the go-ahead to announced the deal. The company will
serve as the prime contractor on these projects, while sub-contracting out hardware, software and computer services.

I know entrust works with American Biometrics, who have that biomouse ($300). Anyone else I don't know about? Any and all comments welcome.

Regards,
Bob
