I just watched a public service channel coverage of a meeting of Senior Public Utility Regulators charged with Y@K responsibility. The meeting happened to be chaired by my daughter Susan Thomas who directs the Unysis world wide Y2K programs. This meeting is part of a series of efforts to coordinate activities across the entire Northeast. It illustrated the exraordinary challenges faced in making sure that efforts within a given sphere of influence are not negated by inattention elsewhere.As a simple example if 911 systems do not operate nuclear power generation in that area must shut down.If gas utilities in OHIO use more gas because of insufficient electric power then New England may not get enough gas because OHIO is upstream in the gas pipeline network.
