Right! The booming alternative medicine market!

This is the fastest growing segment of the health care
market: St. Johnswort, shark cartilege, goldenseal,
vitamins, ginko biloba, ginseng, Ajurvedic formulations,
saw palmetto, etc. etc.

Herbal products with demonstrable medicinal values
substantiated by medical research can be marketed
as nutritional supplements without the need for the
time and expense of getting FDA approval.

SHMN probably has hundreds of candidates in its database,
many of which have not been previously commercialized.
By being the first to commercialize effective herbal
supplements, SHMN could command premium prices for the
period of time it takes competitors to identify the
plants and establish their own sources of supply. By
the time they catch up, SHMN could move on to new
products for which they can again charge premium prices.

Because SHMN is a reputable pharmaceutical firm (except
financially), its products and claims are likely to be
taken seriously and considered to be very credible.
That plus the sexy name and save the rainforests cachet
could make SHMN a very hot company.

The big question is how well and how quickly they can
execute this new strategy. It will take some very savvy
marketing and distribution channel development. Frankly,
I don't know if SHMN is up to it or whether they stay
in business long enough (at recent burn rates) for this
new division to do any good.

The key, as I've mentioned on this thread in the past,
is to think like entrepreneurs with a limited budget
and an intense sense of urgency to achieve positive
cashflow.
