From the press release:

"... with a state-of-the-art storage and retrieval architecture. Delivery of the system will commence in early 1999. <============

Expected to house data from multiple sources, the satellite program requires an automated data archive system capable of quickly storing and retrieving massive amounts of data. Chosen for its performance and reliability...

..Ampex offered the most comprehensive and cost-effective solution. An Ampex spokesperson stated ''This contract is a significant win for Ampex and gives us the opportunity to provide a complete automated archiving and retrieval system for one of the most highly-complex and multi-faceted satellite programs.''

This is great news for Ampex. In addition to an early revenue stream it gives Ampex the best possible kudos that even money can't buy. There is now no one who can touch Ampex at the ultra high end storage / library / retrieval business and they have the proof of it. This will be very important for competing in the unfolding SAN business to be found in the Fortune 1000 and other high speed specialty corporations with mass data storage need.

The name of Ampex, a legend in the broadcasting industry, can now emerge with a cost effective and comprehensive product line solution to address the new requirements in the broadcasting industry. Hence, the importance of fronting the new holding company image with the Ampex name out in front.

Not a bad business plan. Sell comprehensive cost effective solutions in the high end complex mass data storage SAN market while, going forward, position through acquisitions and strategic alliances, a lattice of solutions for the core competency broadcasting business. Done properly, and with the right partnerships, Ampex and Associates can actually influence the direction which the consumer oriented broadcasting business takes.

The SAN market would be the near term high margin revenue producer. The consumer oriented broadcast industry solution would be the prize and is the one that everyone has their eye on – including Bill Gates.

Also good to see Imagio plastered on the announcement. I'm sure that hay will be made of this.
