FileNET and Excalibur Announce Strategic Partnership To Provide Organizations With Sophisticated Document Search Capabilities Across Multiple Types Of Corporate Repositories and Web Sites
Global Integrated Document Management Solution Provider Enters Development Agreement with Leading Knowledge Retrieval Software Solutions Vendor
COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1998-- FileNET Corp. (Nasdaq:FILE - news) and Excalibur Technologies Corp. (Nasdaq:EXCA - news) today announced a strategic partnership to provide a sophisticated level of document search capabilities with relevancy ranking for electronic document management enterprise customers. As part of the development agreement, Excalibur, a FileNET ValueNET® partner, will integrate its Excalibur RetrievalWare® enterprise knowledge retrieval application with FileNET Panagon™ IDM (Integrated Document Management) Document Services software. The resulting solution will enable end-users to seamlessly execute a single search for information in a variety of FileNET document repositories, and other libraries and databases, including Lotus Notes and Microsoft exchange, and externally on the Internet. The FileNET and Excalibur solution will also provide customers with proprietary ranking capabilities to allow search results to be reviewed based on relevancy ranking.

With FileNET and Excalibur's integrated solutions, corporations will be able to use the FileNET/Excalibur software for industry specific-processes such as regulatory compliance issues, product research and development, and sales and marketing applications. Customers will benefit from the solution's ability to search research and development archives to identify earlier projects and records that are useful in new projects being initiated. This capability will become especially important in industries such as process manufacturing where management of plant records, engineering documents, plant maintenance procedures and mission-critical operating and maintenance procedures are key to successful operations.

Similarly, sales and marketing organizations can utilize the combined solution as a mission-critical component of sales automation and proposal development. Information sources both inside and outside the enterprise can be mined effectively for current and historical business intelligence on prospects, customers, partners and competitors to speed the creation of cogent sales presentations, respond effectively to RFPs and stay informed of market developments.

''With the broadening use of enterprise-wide integrated document management and the accessibility of corporate and external repositories and Web sites, huge quantities of information are available,'' said Lee Roberts, president and CEO of FileNET. ''Customers are expressing a need for browser-based, easy-to-use tools to retrieve word processing documents, e-mails, images, graphics, PDF files and other documents. Excalibur enables natural language queries based on 'concepts' including multiple words and phrases that may be used to find information that is of interest to the worker.''

In the first half of 1999, the companies plan to introduce integrated solutions that will allow knowledge workers to use Panagon IDM Document Services to cost-effectively manage and retrieve any document from any internal or external library and then put those documents to work. The FileNET software is a true three-tier client/server application designed for large-scale, information-intensive environments. This server-side integration to allow users to effortlessly access all documents stored in scalable, networked document libraries from within a Microsoft® Windows® Explorer or Web browser interface.

''Organizations that have begun to get serious about capturing and managing a variety of information types require robust methods of searching, filtering, finding, and distributing them,'' said David Yockelson, vice president and director at the META Group. ''Search facilities that link users to leading repositories of information are becoming increasingly important for the creation of 'corporate portals,' or individualized looks into contextually appropriate information emanating from inside and outside organizations. Moreover, the ability to provide these capabilities for any data type ensures that organizations will be able to construct portals for a wide variety of applications.''

A major benefit of integrating Excalibur RetrievalWare is its unique search technology that combines a full semantic network of 500,000 word meanings and 1.4 million word associations with the ability to recognize patterns in digital code and correct for misspellings and OCR (optical character recognition) errors. Excalibur delivers hybrid search algorithms of concept, pattern, statistical and Boolean capabilities; most commodity search engines offer only Boolean and statistical capabilities. This combination of searching provides the only means to accurately search large and disparate document collections distributed over vast networks including Lotus® Notes® and Microsoft® Exchange® repositories.

''Our new relationship with FileNET will make RetrievalWare available to a much broader group of enterprise customers,'' said Patrick Condo, president and chief executive officer of Vienna, Va.-based Excalibur. ''Our search capabilities incorporate the most advanced technologies in the industry. Combined with FileNET's proven IDM solutions, we will enable organizations to successfully deploy large-scale integrated document management applications where accuracy, scalability and reliability are essential.''
