The difference between the 50 day moving average and other averages is just the sensitivity to shorter or longer term movements of a stock. When you get into the 10 and 20 day moving averages, you are talking about using that for trading purposes instead of holding through a longerterm uptrend. I find with those, stocks will wipsaw back and forth through them so they are not useful to me. The 200 day moving averages are used for a much bigger picture because many leading stocks will hold their 200 day even during big corrections like we saw. I think CMGI broke the 200 day for a very short period of time, held through most of the correction. I use 50 day moving averages the most because most leading stocks will hold this average in an up market, but will fall through when the market is headed down for a 3 month or longer correction. CMGI before the last correction would have given a sell signal when it fell through $70 before it's movement down. Moving averages are also good to use to find where supports are. For example people selling CMGI at 66 yesterday is just a bad call.

I'm not sure which book to recommend on MA's but I'll look through what I have and write you a note if I find something you are looking for.

CMGI bouncing off that MA.
