CHICAGO, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Federal Express, the world's largest air express package carrier, said Monday its goal is to eventually have all shipping with the company initiated online, either through the Internet, personal computers or other means.
"Our long-term goal is frankly to have 100 percent of our package for FDX Corp., the Memphis, Tenn.-based parent company of FDX, said in a news conference.
Currently, two-thirds of FedEx business comes from orders placed online, Jones said.
Online orders are less expensive for FedEx to handle, in part because the company does not have to input handwritten orders. When customers places an order electronically, they receive a tracking number and the billing process is automatically initiated, a FedEx spokeswoman said.
While the company will not say how much less it costs to process an electronic order, executives have said that the shift to online business has allowed it to avoid building three call centers that would otherwise have been needed to handle its rising package volume.
On Monday, FedEx said it has enhanced its Internet shipping package, interNetShip, to allow customers to ship more quickly and conveniently.
The system allows businesses in the 58 countries that account for about 98 percent of FedEx's business to ship to 185 countries.
Most of FedEx's Internet-based business comes from business-to-business customers who use FedEx to help manage their supply chains, not retail customers, FedEx said.
FDX is also looking to expand online services it has introduced with FedEx to its other businesses, including ground package carrier RPS Inc., Jones said.
FDX shares were down 1-12/16 at 7-1/16 Monday. |
