"Osicom Scores Metro DWDM Order from Chinese Cable Operator
Osicom Technologies Inc. has landed an initial $2.9 million order from Tangshan Cable Television Network (TCTN) for its GigaMux metro dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system. The Chinese cable operator plans to interface Internet protocol (IP) routers directly to the DWDM system, Osicom reports.
Although TCTN will initially use only a fraction of the DWDM system's 32-channel capacity to deliver voice and video services, it says the deployment makes it well equipped to deliver data services in the near future.
TCTN is an enterprise of the Department of Broadcast and Television of Tangshan, providing cable television services to approximately 600,000 subscribers among the 6.7 million population of Tangshan, located within the Hebei Province approximately 100 miles east of Beijing.
The contract calls for Osicom's GigaMux to transmit digital video and IP-based traffic over 13 nodes of TCTN's multiple-ring fiber network. The initial installation will transmit telecommunications and broadcast video programs on a single, bi-directional fiber at gigabit IP rates, Osicom says.
The network upgrate will allow TCTN to expand into telecommunications, data, and Internet services, in addition to the traditional cable television service it currently provides. The DWDM system enables the coexistence of multiple service offerings over a single fiber and establishes a foundation for convergent applications of digital video, voice, and data, Osicom says."
