CLearly, electronic commerce is here to stay. The ability to shop, make a banking transaction, buy stock and even work from home is no longer wishful thinking - it's now within everyone's reach.

In the workplace, companies rely on Local Area Network to inteconnect office computers. The advent of the internet opens oppurtunities to connect not only office computers but also computers from other sites, or directly with user's homes. This interconnection is seamless and provides unlimited flexibility.

The only practical limitation to unparalleled growth in electronic commerce is system security. Estimates of electronic fraud are staggering, numbering over 5 billion dollars in credit card fraud alone in the U.S. This high level of criminal activity has created an
urgent need for new security techniques that cannot be tampered with. Most of these new systems, however, are based on cryptography and digital certificate technology.
