OpenROUTE Networks, Inc. Announces Upgraded Internetworking Software Suite
OpenROUTE 2.3 Includes Major New Features and Enhancements for GlobeTrotter ISDN Remote Access Routers
WESTBORO, Mass., Jan 20 /PRNewswire/ -- OpenROUTE(R) Networks, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Proteon Inc , today announced the immediate availability OpenROUTE(R) 2.3, the newest version of the internetworking software suite that runs on the company's popular series of GlobeTrotter Remote Access routers. OpenROUTE 2.3 introduces several new wide area network (WAN) capabilities that significantly enhance the GlobeTrotter product line for Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) links. Key new features include:
-- Internet Protocol (IP) Address Assignment, a capability that allows IP addresses to be automatically assigned to a router's WAN ports;
-- Support for Callback, a new feature that allows a Proteon GlobeTrotter router to make or accept call requests to and from the remote routers or access servers;
-- Improved IP filters that block unwanted traffic and allow users to create a collection of access control lists to route traffic based on an organization's network policy; and
-- Support for Internetwork Packet Exchange Wide Area Net (IPXWAN), a new Novell protocol that standardizes the transfer of IPX packets over various WAN media.
Robert Koch, OpenROUTE Networks director of product marketing, said, "The important new software extensions in OpenROUTE 2.3 significantly strengthen Proteon's already strong market presence in ISDN connectivity. Industry research indicates that global demand for ISDN services will grow over 200 percent in the next 18 to 24 months. Proteon is delivering faster, more efficient and more flexible features to serve and enhance the needs of this market. With these improvements, our GlobeTrotter ISDN remote access solutions set the benchmark for the industry, which was evident in recent industry benchmark testing conducted by Strategic Networks Consulting Inc. (see full testing report on the Web at openroute.com)
Major New Product Features
The new version of OpenROUTE provides extensive ISDN support with a flexible multiple mode operation. Key features are modes that automatically determine "Request," "Accept," "Always," and "Disabled." The new IP filters in OpenROUTE 2.3 start by blocking traffic. The user can then create a collection of filters to allow traffic based on an organization's network policies. The filters can provide a complete stateful environment that allows access to specific internal network resources and can also allow internal clients to access services outside the corporate network.
Other enhancements in OpenROUTE 2.3 include new Command Line Editing, Command Completion, and Command Line Recall functions. The new GlobeTrotter Setup Utility is a Microsoft Windows-based graphical configurator that runs under Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows NT, and Windows 95. Bandwidth optimization enhancements have also been implemented to dramatically improve the performance of the Bandwidth Reservation System which allows users to better manage their vital WAN connections.
OpenROUTE 2.3 is optimized to run on Proteon's four new GlobeTrotter ISDN models. The new models, which feature the best price/performance in the industry, include the GlobeTrotter 70-U, which provides full IP connectivity and includes a built-in Network Termination (NT1) device, and the GlobeTrotter 70-S/T model. The GlobeTrotter 72-U and 72-S/T round out the line with support for IP, IPX, AppleTalk 2, and transparent bridging. Prices start at only $995 per unit (US).
IPXWAN, which is the preferred method to run IPX over wide area networks, is now supported over a variety of network transports including PPP, Frame Relay, X.25 and IP Relay. OpenROUTE's implementation of IPXWAN simplifies the deployment of Netware networks by determining the wide area networks' ability to determine which routing protocol is used.
