Thanks Rocketman, Dave, Frank et al. for all the response & high level discussion here, particularly my first lesson in satellite data delivery. I, too, am impressed with the caliber of contributors here.

Rocket, Dave . . . could either of you guys explain some of the raw basics of satellite data delivery here.

I read about right & left polarity. Is the maximize use of the available bandwidth?

What are transponder? What do they do?

What are DBS1, 2, 3? Are these certain brand names of satellites designed for a particular purpose such as data delivery v. broadcast?

What is CONUS?

I plead ignorant here. I presume there is no such thing here as a dumb question. I possess a technical background (though in civil engineering), so I can absorb most attempts by the technically knowledged to explain to the layperson the land(sky)scape here.

As far as Hughes is concerned, it'll be interesting to see the announcement it makes w/i the next month. Rocketman, Dave -- I look forward to your first comments on the Hughes plan here.

PS. Can anyone comment the obligations of cablecos under their franchise agreements, in particular, with reference to the levy of penalties for failing to deliver upgrades as promised?
