Why would anybody be surprised that the gas was being flared. I believe that was part of the plan. The liquids are being separated and captured and the gas is being burned so that it does not create an explosion hazard at the site.
With regard to water and changing percentages of output from the well, is it conceivable that large amounts of Hot gas, oil and steam moving under pressure through the sandstone would cause erosion of the sandstone? It seems to me that once water (or steam) started moving through the sandstone it would almost immediately begin to create erosion and that would increase the volume of water or steam creating even more erosion.
There would be a combination of coning and erosion happening which would lead to a virtual open channel to the water zone. Perhaps some of the geologists could comment on whether water would cause more erosion than gas moving through the structure.
