OT (sort of)

Re: fax documents. This is probably a dumb question. If I fax a document, or receive a fax, I can access the fax file in whatever directory I save it to. But, if I try to view that file in a different fax view program, it won't read. Similarly, it would seem that if I were to send that fax document file as an email attachment to someone, that it would be possible for them to read it in their fax software. But, I've never been able to get it to work.

Since the fax transmissions are standard, it must be in the way the fax software saves the file. Anyone have a clue about how to standardize the file formats so faxes can be emailed?
