Some snippets from MSDW report from last week...

"We met with Komatsu and Nikon at SemiconJapan last week. Komatsu...shipped 15 lasers to Nikon in F1H98 (May-September), and about ten are installed in Japanese fabs. About seven are in volume production. Komatsu expects to ship about 25 systems in F2H98 (ends in March '99). Our contacts at Nikon believe Cymer is still dominant and will likely serve 70% or more of the excimer laser market for photolithography applications in 2000, which is in line with our forecast. We believe Cymer's recent cost of ownership reduction is formidable and essentially neutralized Komatsu's claims, which limits Komatsu's upside potential.

Cymer continues to see a faster-than-expected mix shift to its 5010 series laser, which means our forecast may have a little ASP upside. However, poor unit demand over the next several quarters will likely cause that upside potential to be relatively low.

Nikon and Canon continue to chew through excess 5000 series excimer lasers and most of their respective near term, technology focused demand is centered on advanced 5010 and 6000 series lasers. ASM Lithography is slowly ramping orders due to its low inventory stance with a focus on leading edge 5010 systems. We believe the next few quarters will likely represent a rolling two quarter bottom with a slow recovery in the June quarter and accelerated growth in the second half of 1999."
