Ken: One of many possible revelations I see when omitting the Mega-Standard -MSFT- NOS.
Just having fun here, nothing else <g>
The day is no where near, but besides the platform talked about in the article, one could envision a network edge that hosts web-portals.
One day your advanced DSL service, 2004? could lead to online direct-connects without the need for a NOS. In its simplest form, a modem, connection, browser, and screen may suffice. Your speeds are so great that you download everything online, "rental space", store you "virtual hard drive" and off you go. Allot less technical problems from your end.
If you take nn intelligent, fully integrated communications tool that greatly increases the value and flexibility of your telephone, cell phone, pager, fax, and "virtual personal computer" by integrating them into a single environment. It would transforms everything. Call it a simple-purpose device. And because the intelligence is in the network, not the phone, or home-pc, Think of it as an operating system "online".
Just as programs like Windows™ or MacOS™ can operate your personal computer, this could manage and organize everything online. Of course, its not conceivable at speeds we see today, but the likes of Qwest heading further to the network edge, its feasible one day.
Not only would you have an online website that allows you to receive all fax's, calls, e-mails, voice mail calls, fax over IP, it would also act as your "virtual hard-drive" but in essence, a virtual-computer.
When companies like this take off in that general direction, along with virtual-storage space, its very reasonable starting from the top down. Beside's the storage companies online, these two come to mind in "virtual space". i-link.net zdnet.com
I think the possibilities are endless from the powers of Sun/Oracle, Netscape w/AOL.
Multi-Service-Provider have all the cards, if he choose's to use them effectively.
just a thought,
