Hi Mike, the contrast between home computer access to the net and office computer ditto became unbearable today, and I decided not to wait until after Christmas, went off in search of another Compaq 5170, because I am happy with the one at home. I first went to MicroCenter, a chain, where I had got the first one. They did not have ANY Compaqs with Intel CPUs in stock, just AMD. They carried the 5170, just out of stock, it was listed for $1599, which is what I paid for the first one.
I then went to Staples, they listed the 5170 for $1299, but they were sold out, too.
I then went to Office Depot, they had it.
So I bought it, took it to the office, set it up, and here I am.<g> FWIW, it works like a champ. I am using my ATT Worldnet account, it connected at 44 K, which is better than it does at home, only get 28 K there. I know it's not the connection, because I get 55 K at home when I use AOL. Now I need speakers, so I can play music CDs and .wav files.
(No monitor, no speakers, but it DOES have Intel 350 Pentium II w/ 512 KB cache, 128 MB 100 MHz SDRAM, 10 gig Ultra DMA hard drive, 32x CDROM drive, 4 MB 100 MHz video memory, 2x AGP w/3D graphics, Rockwell v.90K56 modem, 100 MB Zip drive, Aureal 3d sound, MPEG, USB connections, fancy keyboard, mouse, Windows 98 pre-installed, and Microsoft Encarta 98, Money 98, and Bookshelf 98. Word and Excel are already installed.) |
