Kenwood, LSI Logic Develop System Chip For Digital Satellite Receivers

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Kenwood Corp. (6765) and LSI Logic Corp. on Tuesday announced joint development of a system chip for receivers for digital satellite broadcasts.

Digital satellite broadcasting is scheduled to start in Japan late 2000, and some 10 million households are expected to buy receivers or TVs with built-in receivers by 2004.

The two firms have developed a single-chip module incorporating all required functions -- including decoding and turner control -- for receiving such broadcasts.

The U.S. partner will sell the chips directly, while Tokyo-based Kenwood will supply other companies with such equipment as receivers and chip boards on an OEM basis, the two companies said.

Samples of the single-chip module will be shipped in the January-March quarter, with commercial production to start in the April-June quarter. Sample chips will be priced at 20,000 yen.
