Michael, your digital spread spectrum explanation took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to go into a little more technically elegant detail but afraid to bury the thread's non-tekkies. Under the circumstances, well done. :-)
Now: can you top this?
While caught in a traffic jam, I actually ready my QCOM 2700 owner's manual (hey, it's better than road rage). Sprint has this new deal called "Text Messaging" and it's ONLY available in way cool and technically advanced markets like San Francisco. Even if you live in the land of the San Diego mother ship, you ain't got this baby. Dig it: somebody sends a regular old e-mail to:
XXXYYYYYYY@messaging.sprintpcs.com (where the X's and Y's are your cell phone number; message limit is 100 characters)
So naturally I did it from the office and on the way home from work 20 minutes later I get this little beep and the envelope icon pops up which I pushed and the test message I sent to myself scrolls across the screen. Zowie! Rad! Surf's Up! [You can also do this by going to Sprint's PCS web page, click "Inside Messaging" and post the message there].
Now I have no idea what practical implications, if any, this form of communication might have but man is it neat or what? Also, HOW IN THE HELL DOES THIS WORK? Not to offend anyone but I consider this just slightly more miraculous than the Birthday everyone will be celebrating in a week or so. From the Cutting Edge, Surfer Mike
