Stephen, the first time I read about this type of architecture was in 1988, when ATT first got its national fiber backbone up, and when they unleashed their first DS3 DACS (3/3/1). I believe it was nCube in competition with DEC to provide the server platforms that T was going to use for video on demand (specifically called that at the time).

The schema was actually proposed whereby a central DACS (digital access cross-connect system, the same as a DCS, except that DACS is a T trade name), would serve as a distribution mechanism for points of reception around the country. I recall the props used for this, showing a video distribution platform in San Jose (or somewhere out there on the coast where they got into dress-down days before the rest of the country), delivering video selections across the continent. Three level hierarchical storage was used for less frequently viewed content, etc.

Of course, this didn't necessarily mean to residences, and at the time it was only smoke and mirrors, with some "prototypes being built when I last paid any attention to it. But the idea was there.

Since then I think we've seen a dozen VOD schemes come and go. Let's see what these folks can do now. Let's see.... 1988.. that's ten years. I think they oughta have it right by now.
