Radiolinja and Nokia sign USD 160 million frame agreement for dual band GSM solutions

(December 16, 1998) - Nokia and Radiolinja, Finland, have signed a three-year frame agreement for provision of equipment covering both GSM 900 and GSM 1800 frequencies. The contract is valued at almost USD 160 million. (FIM 800 million).

Nokia will supply GSM 1800 and GSM 900 base stations, base station controllers, its short message service centre and the Nokia Network Management System. Nokia will also provide Intelligent Network solutions, enabling Radiolinja to further its value-added service offering.

Under the agreement, Radiolinja will additionally take the Nokia MetroSite High Capacity GSM base stations into use.

"The objective for Radiolinja is that we have the most advanced solutions from which our customers can benefit," says Pertti Malva, Managing Director, Radiolinja. "The amount of subscribers for our nationwide dual band network is increasing rapidly. Voice and short message traffic has more than doubled in one year and new GSM data services will require more capacity from the network."

Radiolinja was founded in 1988 and opened the world's first GSM network in 1991. The Radiolinja concern comprises of Radiolinja Eesti, SIA Radiolinja Latvia, Globalstar Finland and associated companies Mäkitorppa and Setele.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching as well as extensive services and network management solutions for building, efficiently operating and developing these networks. Having supplied GSM technology to 78 operators in 37 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.
