Giraffe,
I hate the idea of bombing as much as you do, but your wrong about the impact of bombs(and missiles more so) on the price of gold. As each missile is fired(or smart bomb dropped) gold is used up, as the electrical contacts inside gyro pick-up points are gold. Most of the mil-spec IC's in water based military are wire bonded with inside the individual package with gold wire. Last figure I knew was 1/10 oz gold with-in each H.A.R.M and Cruise missile. Many Air-to-air missiles are even (slightly) more. The effects of war are often felt more heavily in silver, though. Even in today's modern army, the resolution can not be achieved with electronic over traditional photos when operating in IR.
Also, as sorties increase, the number of X-rays increase to assure fitness of the airframes based on number of hours flown.

Even as good as ol 49er may be at recovering gold, I can't see the economics in sifting through the entire building (or street) for 1/10 oz.
