Taiwan's Silicon Integrated Systems said today that it was close to signing a licensing deal with giant Intel
to make chipsets using Intel's Pentium II processors.

"We have been in talks with Intel about the Pentium II patent for a long time and now are finally close to a
deal," an SIS spokeswoman said by telephone.

"There are a few details yet to be finalized. But we are very, very close," said the spokeswoman, who
asked not to be named. "We could strike a deal any time."

As earlier reported, SIS would be the second firm authorized to make Pentium II chipsets. In November,
Taiwan's unlisted VIA Technologies signed a licensing deal with Intel to make platform components for the
Pentium II, Intel's top central processing unit.

Chipsets are assemblies that contain a computer central processing unit so it can be installed in a
computer.

Until recently Intel had made its own chipsets for the Pentium II, though third parties have been licensed to
make chipsets for earlier Pentium models.

The spokeswoman said she had noted a shift in Intel's attitude.

"Intel has been reluctant about such deals in the past. But I think it has realized it needs other third parties
to expand the market," she said.
