1) K6 core was designed around 64k L1.
2) PII core was designed around 32k L1.
3) Katmai core was designed artound 32k L1, but has 64k.
4) K7 core was designed around 128k L1.

Maybe that has something to do with it--although I'm guessing the benfits of the extra L1 in Katmai will become clearer over time.
