Trent Lott's statement was absolutely shameful. A lot of Americans can remember a time, not so very long ago, when there was an unwritten rule not to criticize the President when he was abroad. That seems quaint today, but that sense of decency sticks with many us, even in these cynical and unprincipled times. It was bad enough that the Republicans were shredding Clinton when he was in Israel and Gaza. But now they're hammering him in the midst of a U.S. military action! Behavior of this kind is as un-American as it gets. I'm proud to live in a country where Trent Lott can say something so insidious in a time of national emergency and not get thrown in jail or lined up against a wall and shot.
