As a programmer, you are only looking at technical advantages, while the public in general and the courts are looking at advantages to the consumer. If 2 out 3 people find it more convenient to have browsing functions in the OS, than it is advantageous, regardless of raw performance. MSFT is selling software, not entering a theoretical speed contest of academia.

Phase 1 (complete): McDonalds are now 90% of all a restaurants in the universe.

Phase 2 (ongoing): McDonalds coerces grocery stores into removing flour and yeast - these are available 'bundled' at MacDonalds.

Phase 3 (Integrating IExploder): McDonalds coerces grocery stores to replaces their fresh produce section with a MacDonalds restaurant counter. (Innovative vegetable solutions are available at McDonalds.)

Phase 4 (future): MacDonalds progressively replaces the remaining aisles with MacDonald restaurant counters. Groceries are no longer sold - you eat at a (McDonlads) restaurant.

You are of course free to grow your own produce, and raise your own livestock. Of course, that would be to ignore the convenience and integrity of the McDonalds experience, right?
