Interesting Japanese article on exotic batteries - mainly laptop and cell phone applications.

A while back, I commented that I thought Li Polymer batteries would be major contenders in electronic applications. (I think they do not have enough power output to be the best choice for power tools, etc.; but I would like confirmation of this as I am not really sure). Li Poly batteries are apparently now entering these markets in a big way - starting in 1999.

Here is a link to a Japanese article that discusses the status, including such things as tiny fuel cells. The article is not comprehensive as it ignores, for example, Valence Technology (VLNC).
