My question is related to the opposite of a dream machine, so if it would be better asked elsewhere please provide a link.

I'm looking to construct a 3 computer network for testing purposes, as cheaply as possible. To start with I'll be running NT Server 4.0 on one machine, NT Workstation 4.0 on one, and Win98 on one.

It seems like a low-end Pentium would suffice, probably 16MB RAM in the clients and 32MB in the server, .5G hard drives in each, regular VGA monitors, cheap keyboards, a CD ROM drive for the server, 3 network cards, and a hub. I guess having a floppy drive in each would be good too.

Am I missing anything?

I don't mind putting together the systems, although it seems like the shipping charges on the individual components are going to kill me, so I'm not convinced scrounging on ONSALE, for example, would be the way to go.

I guess what I'm looking for is a price range for what you think this will cost, what the best approach to finding the stuff would be, and if anyone else has done anything similar.

If I could do it all for $500 I'd be pleased. Anything over $1,000 is out of the question.

Thanks for your help.
