John, if only there were some good financial journalists with a healthy degree of skepticism who might take it upon themselves to dig a little deeper into today's call and recent options activity.

cbs.marketwatch.com

From CBSMArketwatch Tuesday:
Jon Najarian, who heads Mercury Trading at the CBOE, said there were some bets in Micron Technology (MU) that smacked of expiration plays. Some players were "hoping against hope" that the chip-maker will release earnings before December's option expiration.
"The big thing with Micron is that they don't like to disclose their earnings release, sometimes to the detriment of shareholders," said Najarian. He expects the release to come next week.

Hmmm...
1. 5,000 out-of-the-money Dec 50 calls change hands Tuesday.
2. there is some opinion that the speculative action is driven by the anticipation of a possible news event occurring prior to the December expiration.
3. the news event mentioned in the piece is an earnings release.
4. the earnings release is expected next week, after the December expiration
5. a news event does indeed occur, but it is not the earnings release.
6. this news event is a bizarre 3-year $200 price target coming out of MU's underwriter two days after all that interesting activity in soon-to-expire out-of-the-money December calls.
7. the stock gains +12.8% on the heels of that 3-year $200 price target and those options close almost 3 pts. in-the-money.

Can someone please complete the following argument:

There's nothing remotely suspicious about the above because...

I know I can't.

Good trading,

Tom
