The answer is they go "no bid". However, I bet there is whole army of people whose strategy is to either write naked puts or calls way out of the money a day before expiration to collect small premiums on large numbers of contracts. I bet they spread their risk accross a broad spectrum of stocks and sectors. If any positions look like they may go against you, either buy or short the stock to stay covered. Keep all of the other positions naked.
