DownSouth - only network and mass storage management Here again, be cautious about over-simplification. Modern database engines also require asynch queing mechanisms, thread management, memory management, spinlock control, and a host of other support services. The OS can be reduced somewhat since it does not need to run 'ad-hoc' applications and range of operation is much more predictable, but really what is going on is more like tuning a special purpose version of the OS, most OS functions are still required.
