Maurice,

But maybe the GSM Europeans would prefer no cdma2000 backward compatibility to cdmaOne because they might find competitors installing cdmaOne over the next couple of years before cdma2000 is ready to go

I was under the impression that Europe (at least the western Europe) was fairly mature market, with almost complete GSM coverage. I don't know if there are any startup wireless companies that could jump on CDMAOne. A lack of roaming capability would be a disadvantage for the start-up company until there are CDMAOne / GSM phones.

Also, I was under the impression that CDMA200 was a lot closer than a couple of years from completion (of the standard setting). What is the actual status? Does anyone have an idea how long would it take QCOM to finalize the spec if no time was wasted on the 3G negotiation?

Joe
