dagnabbit there could be trouble in South Korea:

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korean navy ships fought a gunbattle with a suspected North Korean submarine Friday and sunk it off South Korea's southern coast, the Defense Ministry said.

The 10-ton craft was first spotted shortly before midnight Thursday as it approached the shore near Yosu, a port city 200 miles south of Seoul.

The sub then fled southeast, leading South Korean navy ships and air force planes on a chase for 5 1/2 hours, the ministry said.

Trapped 60 miles off the coast, the fleeing sub opened fire at the pursuing South Korean ships. In a brief exchange of fire, South Koreans then sank the sub, the ministry said.

The body of one of the sub's crewmen was recovered in a wet suit, the ministry said.

North Korea routinely uses submarines to drop off or pick up spies along South Korea's long coastline, officials say. Several have been detected in recent years.
