LS120..how fast?

I had a chance to play a little today. The results are very inconclusive and somewhat erratic.

The drive performed best copying one large file to the drive. It took about 8 seconds to copy a 1.4 MB file from the harddrive to the LS120. The reverse process was about the same.

I tried copying a lot of small 1KB files ( Dave indicated his backup with small files was slow) and had poor results. Groups of files would copy quickly and then the process would slow and then another group would copy quickly...this continued for about 10 sec and then the process halted. I was limited to less than 300 files. I was not able to approach the capacity of a 1.4 MB floppy.

I tried formatting again. I do not know what I did last time but the results are different this time. It took about 8 sec to format a 1.4 MB floppy from the msdos window, 8 sec for the quick format option in Win95 and 7 seconds for the full format option in Win95.

I found it annoying that the drive would continue to spin in some cases after I copied a file or used the drive. The drive light stayed on for a significant amount of time..sometimes more than a minute.

This is one of the first drives on the market. I do not know if it is representative of todays LS120 drives and drivers.
