On the subject of data.
In 1989/90, I helped a paging sales guy set up his laptop, Oki cellular phone [data over analog AMPS] and alphanumberic pager so he could demonstrate the utility of alphanumric pagers for dispatching, say, service calls.
The data link over cellular was a)considered cool by all that saw it and b)9600 bps.
Today, 9 years later, wireless data hasn't budged much. CDPD appeared and underwhelmed the wireless world. Speeds haven't increased -- at all. And, to be quite frank, I doubt that higher speeds will change things much.
With a phone you pick it up, dial the number [push the DC button] and talk.
Until it's that easy for data, it'll never fly. |
