George, You'll get the terrorist attacks regardless of whether we attack Iraq or no- the USA's mere existence negatives literally everything the Middle Eastern radicals stand for....By definition they have to attack us. We already have lots of strong allies amongst the Arabs and just to the north in Central Asia- we do not need another pro-American regime in the Middle East. Yes, I agree that Pres. Clinton may be trying to deflect some attention from himself. And be careful getting sucked into stereotyping Iraq or the Middle East too. The Middle East is as rich and varied as the western World- and contains just as many political opinons right/left pro/con as the West. Also there are substantial non-Moslem religious minorities in the Middle East. For example the Foreign Minister of Iraq Tarik Asiz- is a Christian. So is Nizar Hamdoon Iraqi Ambassdor to the US. Saddam's oldest son Uday is also reputed to have accepted Jesus Christ and converted from Islam to Christianity of late. Also amongst the Muslim majority in the Middle East, a whole lot of them would like to see Saddam gone. For example do you see Iraq's neighbors the Turks, Syrians, Kuwaitis, Saudis, Abu Dhabians, rallying to Saddam's cause? His mere presence is distorting governmental spending priorities (defense) when declining oil revenues are pinching governmental coffers. And that includes many Iraqis too. Just before the Gulf War in 1991 major Iraqi Government members approached a certain energy company and gave their executives sensitive information about Iraq's defense/capacity/weaponry posture which was turned over to the US Government. So a whole lot of Iraqis would like to see Saddam gone too.... And as for nuclear proliferation- it is bad no matter who develops the weapons for whatever reason.. Finally we are attacking a very determined foe who will hit back. Make no mistake about that. And as to attacking the "weak sisters" in the World- we defeated Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in the 20th Century. So we can defeat another form of fascism, God willing..... Sincerely, Doug F.
