Tom, I know you said you don't read much, but I would recommend the science fiction of Philip K. Dick, who wrote often, and well, on the concept of moving between alternate realities. One theme of his was exploring circumstances in which reality would change and the actor would remember what it was like before it changed. Or not. I have everything he wrote. My favorite on that topic is "Ubik."

He also wrote, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," which was filmed as "BladeRunner."

His later stuff, "Valis" and all that, written right before his death, I did not like so much.

I did not get whether you read non-fiction. If so, I am presently reading "Phantoms in the Brain" by V.S. Ramachandran, M.D., Ph.D., about mental diseases and injuries that cause impaired perception of reality, e.g., phantom limbs.
