Conscience expresses ".. that our notions of right and wrong are not to be deduced from a single principle or faculty, but from various powers of the understanding and will."

A true vote of conscience demands the opportunity to voice a range of judgement, not just yes or no. By intentionally eliminating the opportunity to vote a middle ground, the Republicans have lost the truth of a vote of conscience today.

By demanding a yes/no vote, Republicans are saying ".. you're either with us or against us," to their fellow members.

If the Republican party were to uphold and support that each member of Congress must vote his or her own conscience a yes/no requirement wouldn't be necessary.
