The Republican Party thinks that the voting public is stupid
I wouldn't paint all Republicans with that broad brush. I do think that the radical elements realized from the last election that their time was numbered. They were threatened by a return to the middle of their own party (i.e. more G.Bush JR and less Dan Quayle). On the way out they want to burn down the house.
