As to benefit of the doubt and the level of service, I've lived in bad bad neighborhoods in LA (Boyle Heights, east Hollywood) and I've lived in Brentwood. I can tell you from experience that the tone one gets from police, and the 'service level', is far better in a 'good' neighborhood. One seldom gets ones skull beaten in over a traffic offense in Brentwood. Whereas one can seldom get a burglary investigated in South Central. It is my ambition, having escaped from poorer neighborhoods, not to go back. The level of police service is certainly one good reason, and I sure don't resent being part of a heavily taxed class to obtain this different treatment and attention to my needs. In fact the perception that you may be a member of such a taxpaying class is your best protection when in the hands of the police. Chaz
