>>> TP (Who wished a Republican of Lincoln's stature would appear)
That's hardly possible. In Lincoln's time, the Republican party was the liberal, progressive party, and the Democratic party was the home for the nuts, apologists, racists, and so forth. Now, the Republican party is home to those fringe types, and surely can't produce anyone of stature to compete with Lincoln.
Not that I'm waiting for the Democrats to do so either. I support them more right now because they are the underdogs at the moment, and they don't have any connection with the religious nuts. That doesn't mean they are a repository of wisdom or good deeds in the making. I do trust them very slightly more when it comes to war and employment. They did balance the budget. Basically, they went ahead and did everything the Republicans only said they would do, coopting what few good financial ideas the Republicans did have and eliminating the old advantage the Republicans had had in fiscal matters, leaving the Republicans the party of social contention and righteous finger pointing.
Anyway, everyone seems to be out of new ideas now. Well, not new ideas, but the credibility to push needed solutions and new ideas through.
